Kaloud Lotus I+3: Ultimate Hookah Heat Management Guide

How the Kaloud Lotus I+3 heat management device works: materials, Lotus I+ vs I+3, measured bowl temperatures, setup, heat adjustment, cleaning and bowl fit.

The Kaloud Lotus I+3 is a heat management device (HMD) that sits on a hookah bowl in place of foil. It holds up to four large coals in a solid stainless steel base under an aluminum lid with rotating vents. You set the heat with coal count, coal position and the vents. In three Kaloud test sessions, it kept the bowl below 220°C for 81 to 91 minutes [2].

New to HMDs? Start with what a hookah heat management device is and how it works.

What is the Lotus I+3 made of?

  • Base: machined from solid stainless steel. It holds heat and spreads it across the whole bowl. The edges are rounded.
  • Lid: lightweight aluminum. It rotates to open and close the vents.
  • Capacity: up to four large natural coconut coals.
  • Finish: resists chipping, flaking, discoloration and rust. It comes in several colors.

How is the Lotus I+3 different from the Lotus I+?

A side by side comparison of Kaloud Lotus I+ and Lotus I+3 in stainless steal

The Lotus I+ came first. The Lotus I+3 changes the base material, the coal capacity and the way you adjust heat.

Lotus I+ Lotus I+3
Base Aluminum Solid stainless steel
Coal capacity Two large coals Up to four large coals
Heat adjustment Fixed vent position Rotating lid with adjustable vents
Weight Lighter, more portable Heavier, more thermal mass

More thermal mass means the base heats more slowly and cools more slowly. That evens out temperature swings when you add or move a coal.

What temperature should the Lotus I+3 keep the bowl at?

Kaloud's working range for shisha is 130 to 220°C. Above about 220°C, the glycerol and propylene glycol in shisha start to break down [1]. A 2017 PLOS One study of heated glycerol and propylene glycol in e-cigarette solvents detected carbonyl formation starting around 215°C [1]. That was a lab study of the solvents, not a hookah measurement. For the full science, see what temperature shisha should be heated to and what happens to shisha molasses when it overheats.

Kaloud logged three full sessions with a Lotus I+3 on a tall black bowl with 30 g of shisha, using two Type K thermocouples and a LOG200-TC logger.

Session Bowl Length Peak reading
13 Sep 2026 Niris 89 min 216.7°C
20 Sep 2026 Niris 81 min 197.5°C
23 Sep 2026 Argis 2.0 91 min 219.2°C

The hottest reading was 219.2°C. Every session stayed below 220°C at its hottest point [2].

How do you set up the Lotus I+3?

  1. Light the coals fully. Use natural coconut coals on an electric burner or open flame until every side glows red-orange and a gray ash coat forms. Never light coals inside the Lotus. Direct contact with a coal burner can warp the metal.
  2. Pack the bowl for the shisha type. Blonde leaf gets a light, fluffy pack just below the rim. Dark leaf takes a slightly denser pack. Leave a gap so the shisha never touches the Lotus base.
  3. Set the Lotus on the bowl so it sits flat and centered.
  4. Add two or three coals with tongs, depending on coal size, spaced evenly around the base.
  5. Close the lid and let it heat up for 7 to 14 minutes before the first draw.

Kaloud pairs the Lotus I+3 with the Kaloud Samsaris Vitria bowls.

How do you adjust heat with the Lotus I+3?

Start with the vents closed and open them gradually as the session goes on. Make one change at a time and wait a minute before the next.

Problem What to do
Too hot or harsh Rotate the lid to open the vents wider, lift the lid briefly, or remove one coal. Check that the pack is not touching the base.
Not enough heat Rotate the lid to close the vents. Check that the coals are fully lit. Check the bowl seal for leaks. Then add a lit coal.
Uneven heat Reposition the coals evenly. Rotate the Lotus every 10 to 15 minutes. Check that the bowl sits level on the stem.

How do you clean and care for the Lotus I+3?

After each use:

  1. Let the Lotus cool completely, 30 to 45 minutes.
  2. Remove all ash and coal remnants with tongs.
  3. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth.
  4. Check the vents and clear any blockage.
  5. Air dry fully before storing.

Weekly deep clean:

  • Separate the lid from the base.
  • Soak both in hot water for 2 to 3 hours.
  • Scrub residue from the vents and corners with a soft brush.
  • Skip soap, bleach, steel wool and abrasives. They damage the finish.
  • Dry completely and reassemble.

Long-term care: store the Lotus somewhere dry, inspect it for wear, and replace it if it warps.

Which bowls work with the Lotus I+3?

Bowl Fit
Samsaris Vitria III Kaloud's recommended size for the Lotus I+3
Samsaris Vitria II Fits with a slight overhang
Samsaris Original Fits
Other phunnel bowls Need a flat rim that fully supports the base, in heat-resistant clay or ceramic

Before packing, check that the bowl sits level on the stem, the Lotus sits flush on the rim and the seal holds on a test draw.

Frequently asked questions

How many coals does the Lotus I+3 hold?

The Lotus I+3 holds up to four large natural coconut coals. Kaloud recommends starting with two or three, depending on coal size, and keeping another lit coal ready to add later. Start low and add heat gradually. The goal is to keep the shisha within the working range of 130 to 220°C.

What is the difference between the Lotus I+ and the Lotus I+3?

The Lotus I+ has an aluminum base and holds two large coals. The Lotus I+3 has a solid stainless steel base, holds up to four large coals and adds a rotating lid with adjustable vents. The heavier steel base adds thermal mass, which evens out temperature swings during a session.

Which bowls fit the Lotus I+3?

The Lotus I+3 needs a bowl with a flat rim that supports its base completely. Kaloud pairs it with the Samsaris Vitria III, the Vitria II with a slight overhang, and the original Samsaris. Most clay or ceramic phunnel bowls with a flat rim also work. Avoid curved or narrow rims.

How do you clean the Lotus I+3?

Let it cool completely, which takes 30 to 45 minutes. Remove ash with tongs and wipe the inside with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, separate the lid and base, soak both in hot water for 2 to 3 hours and scrub with a soft brush. Skip soap, bleach and abrasives, which damage the finish.

How hot does a bowl get under the Lotus I+3?

In three Kaloud test sessions with a Lotus I+3 on a tall black bowl with 30 g of shisha, peak readings were 216.7°C, 197.5°C and 219.2°C. Sessions ran 81 to 91 minutes. Every session stayed below 220°C at its hottest point, the top of the 130 to 220°C working range.
